Welcome to Auswalk Walking Holidays

Hike unique destinations

For over 30 years, Auswalk has specialised in delivering guided, self-guided and customised walking holidays. We create a platform for guests to unplug and explore the most amazing landscapes and grant a backstage pass to the rich cultural history of regions, such as the Camino de Santiago or the Kumano Kodo. Our walks traverse tropical rainforests and secluded beaches, journeying across ridges and majestic mountain ranges. They find their way through ancient Roman towns and the French Riviera to majestic Japanese temples and other hidden gems.

Accommodation

Whether traversing the Great Ocean Walk, walking in Japan, exploring the Blue Mountains or walking in the remote wilderness of the outback, guests will be pampered in comfortable accommodations in unique locations at the end of the day. We know the accommodation is important but not if we have to sacrifice the experience. We use the most authentic, characterful and intimate accommodations available. We know a friendly welcome and all the comforts of home are worth their weight in gold, and that personality and family run is better than polished and impersonal.

Meals

We believe meals are to be remembered, not just consumed. Meals are often accompanied by exceptional views or are served in a beautiful setting, and you can be assured that fresh, locally sourced, and high-quality ingredients are used. Local professional chefs prepare most breakfasts and dinners, which enhances the food experience but also leaves more time for our guides to do what they love, that’s to guide.

Auswalk guide Merel on an guided walk

Our People

Our passionate and committed guiding team have walked all over the world. All our guides are experienced people with a comprehensive knowledge of local fauna and flora and the history of the walks they are guiding. Safety is essential, as is having wilderness first aid plus all the other relevant qualifications. They’re backed by a talented behind-the-scenes support team delivering thoughtful and insightful customer service. Our people love what they do, and it shows.

Eco-responsible travel

We travel responsibly, treading lightly, leaving no trace. We offset our emissions, power up with the use of solar, and work with local conservation organisations to help maintain tracks. We are one of the original tourism organisations with Advanced Eco Tourism Accreditation. All of our walking holidays are designed to engage walkers as much as we can with nature to promote the value of the environment.

We’re committed to creating and running our own trips

We have been designing walking holidays for nearly 30 years, so we know that the details are important. That’s why we have won more than a dozen tourism awards and are in the Adventure Tourism Hall of Fame. We create these once-in-a-lifetime walking journeys, which means we are hands-on with regard to our trips. We take pride in what we do; we’ve walked the tracks over and over (& over) to create the best possible experience for our walkers.

Slow travel

We love the idea of slow travel, and we have perfected the notion of walking pack-free at the perfect pace. Travelling on foot without a heavy pack means you slow down and experience the world around you, the place and its people. Exploring pack-free on foot is both eco-friendly and human-friendly. Carrying a very small backpack with less than a couple of kilos enhances the walking experience profoundly, as does having access to a hot shower, a glass of wine, a good meal, and a comfortable night’s sleep.

Testimonials

What a fabulous trip – amazing hiking country and the alpine flowers in bloom made it stunningly pretty! We loved visiting the old cattlemen huts along the way and learning about the gold mining history of the region. All the accommodation and transport arrangements worked smoothly and we didn’t have to worry about a thing! Great standard of accommodation and food along the way and the local Auswalk contacts were so friendly, helpful, and supportive and very flexible to ensure our needs were met! Their local knowledge was invaluable. We felt very well looked after! Would definitely recommend this walk!

Had a great time doing this walk(despite of one rainy day) thanks to AUSWALK who had put together a great package of accommodation with luggage transfer. Nothing to do but enjoy the walk and at the end a good meal from friendly hosts. I had a great time. Great job thanks Sanyana.

Just back from an impulsively-booked 7 day Snowies/Mt Kosciuszko walk with Auswalk. How else could one book an impulsive walking holiday in a longed-for destination and yet be thoroughly assured that the walk notes would be honed from years of expertise and local knowledge and contain everything to get us from A to Z. Meals beautifully catered with due care to any intolerances and chair-lift options already ticketed for those days when that last long steep and arduous ascent or descent is just a step too far after a long day spent revelling in the beauties and spectacles and bush picnics in the most idyllic settings! Never a doubt that our accommodation will be anything less than impeccable, nor that those responsible for smoothing and catering for our holiday and sending us on our way each day will be capable, reliable, punctual, knowledgeable and sincerely concerned for our wellbeing. Thank you Auswalk. Such a relief to be able to leave the plethora of intricate arrangements necessary for that 7 days of blissful freedom in your capable hands in the assurance that nothing would be forgotten.

My Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair trip was the first time I had used Auswalk. Very impressed with their professionalism. Very good communicators. Any questions are answered very promptly. Very easy to navigated booking and payment systems and best of all – all the arrangements they had made for my trip in Tasmania ran like clockwork. A good team using good people to deliver the promised services. Once you are in their care at the agreed starting point, you have no further worries, just enjoy the wonderful scenery of your walk until they deliver you back to an agreed finishing point. Very impressed, would certainly use Auswalk again and have no hesitation in highly recommending them.

This is my second Auswalk and again I can not fault the attention to detail of the Auswalk staff in the office and on the ground. A fabulous walk and excellent accommodation, great food and wine and the trail was challenging enough to make you feel like you earned what came next. The bonus is that you are submerged in the most stunning of environments with your friends and at the end of the day you get to sit back and be pampered and enjoy a night filled with laughter and conversation, 2 course meals and of course a few drinks,  One of the best walking holidays I’ve ever had and all in all a soul nourishing experience.

The Great Alpine Walk was fantastic. Being skiers who regularly spend time on the mountains in winter, it was very special to experience them in summer. Having completed many walking holidays, Auswalk continues to be the most professional, detail-oriented and experienced walking holiday company out there. Nothing is too hard.  The accommodation was great, and all the hosts (particularly in the mountains) were lovely. Being able to enjoy a glass of wine or two and a good meal at the end of a day’s hiking is the only way to do it!

This is the second walk with Auswalk we have done, and we are already planning our third (and fourth, and fifth…).

Maddie H – Great Alpine Walk

Absolutely amazing – have been raving about it all week to everyone I have met since returning home.

Nyla B  – Gold Coast Hinterland

I had the BEST holiday with Auswalk exploring this beautiful country, up close and personal. Thanks Auswalk, especially our guides Katie and Bill. Fun group of fellow walkers, lots of laughs, smiles and stories to tell.

Therese D – Flinders Ranges

Another fantastic experience walking on Lord Howe Island with Auswalk. Marie and Paul were excellent guides and I’ll certainly be doing another walk in the future.

Simone S – Lord Howe Island

Our Great Ocean Walk was excellent – we had a very friendly group of nine, led by guides Katie and Merel. The weather, scenery and environment all contributed to a wonderful week of hiking along a beautiful coastline. Our guides were experienced, caring, well organised and catered for our needs. Highly recommended.

Peter A – Great Ocean Walk

Everything about this trip was fantastic and exceeded our expectations. It covered all the main areas in the Red Centre and covered all of the best walks possible. The guides were excellent and the food and accommodation enhanced this uniquely Australian experience.

I had a wonderful week and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. I would have no hesitation recommending Auswalk. The guides were fantastic and everything was extremely well organised from start to finish.

Luci W – Great Ocean Walk

This is my third self-guided walk with Auswalk and I’ve enjoyed every one. Auswalk had planned all itineraries and covered every contingency. All walks had spectacular scenery, delightful accommodation and delicious meals.

Leslie  – Grampians

Auswalk takes great care in providing the best experience possible, organising all the details so the walk is stress free and most enjoyable. Their guides are welcoming, professional and knowledgeable.

John and Trish P – Cape to Cape

I’ve done five walks with Auswalk and they’re a terrific company to deal with. All the guides share the same passion for their work and are always very informative and helpful. I thoroughly recommend Auswalk to anyone who is looking for the kind of holiday where all you have to do is turn up and walk. They take care of everything else.

Cathy R – Flinders Ranges & Great Ocean Road Walk

Our walk was a wonderful experience. Auswalk did a great job organising everything and we felt well prepared with all the information they provided. There was so much diversity in flora, fauna, interesting landscapes and geology. We stayed in lovely accommodation and were fed delicious food with access to great local wines.

Caroline H – Cape to Cape

The trip was well organised and the information and the notes were well documented and very accurate.  It is clear that Auswalk updated their notes regularly. The accommodation was luxurious and the meals were delicious. There was a good variety and large servings of food, all combined to make this a very memorable trip.
